The rocket-like Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the pagoda-like Jin Mao (second from right), in 2002 China's tallest building, epitomise Pudong, the high-tech finance and trade centre that arose as if overnight in the nineties, and is central to Shanghai's ambitious goal to overtake Tokyo as finance capital of the East.
